Hyperconnectivity

People living in a society of hyper-connectivity leave footprints in data, regardless of the intentions of an individual. As in big data, social media, surveillance cameras, and transaction history, an individual of the actual world creates another self in cyberspace through a digital footprint.

The self in cyberspace interacts with the self in the actual world and demolishes the border between the two worlds. Such a digital footprint left in cyberspace is the new main form of footprints left by a man in hyper-connectivity.

This work unfolds a process of leaving a digital footprint in two stages. The first stage shows the process of developing the performer’s actual shape in hyperspace by dotting white pixels on a dark screen. The second stage shows the printing process of leaving a digital footprint as the shape of the performer, uploaded in hyperspace, fills the dark screen with a myriad of colors.

There will exist only numerous digital footprints left in hyperspace if the people living in the age of hyper-connectivity no longer exist in the actual world. It is the self in hyperspace, seen in the remaining digital footprints, representing those in the society of hyper-connectivity—whom are soon to disappear.

초연결사회를 살아가는 인간들은 개인의 의도와 상관없이 데이터에 흔적을 남긴다. 소셜미디어, 빅데이터, CCTV, 결제정보. 이러한 디지털 흔적(digital footprint)을 통해 실재 세계의 개인은 가상공간에 새로운 자아를 탄생시킨다.

가상공간의 자아는 실재 세계의 자아와 서로 영향을 주고받고 가상공간과 실재의 경계를 허물어뜨린다. 이러한 가상공간에 남겨지는 디지털 흔적은 초연결사회 인간이 남기는 흔적의 새로운 주(main) 형태이다.

본 작품은 두 단계의 전개 과정을 통해 디지털 흔적이 남겨지는 과정을 이야기한다. 첫 번째 단계에서는 흰 픽셀들이 검은 스크린에 찍히며 퍼포머의 실재 형상을 가상공간에 형성해 나가는 과정을 보여준다. 자아가 형성되는 과정은 곧 '업로드'이다. 두 번째 단계에서는 가상공간에 업로드가 완료된 퍼포머의 형상이 검은 스크린을 형형색색으로 가득 메워내며 디지털 흔적을 남기는 프린팅 과정이다.

초연결사회를 살아가는 인간의 존재가 실재 세계에 더 존재하지 않게 되면 가상공간에 남겨진 수많은 디지털 흔적들만이 존재할 것이다. 남겨진 디지털 흔적들을 통해 보이는 가상공간의 자아가 곧 사라진 초연결사회 시대의 인간을 대변하는 것이다.
